• Visiting Scholar

Oct 2015 – May 2016

• Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Aug 2013 – May 2016

Built prediction algorithms to strengthen grid resilience and health-monitoring schemes for lithium-ion battery packs. Developed architectures for electromechanical oscillation detection, along with a median-based expectation operator for capturing fast system dynamics and diagnosing faults in hybrid electric vehicles. Designed nonlinear and robust controllers for load frequency, oscillation damping and bad-data detection.

Contributed to NSF and Aramco research proposals in oil-well permeability classification, oscillation monitoring and hybrid electric vehicles. Supervised three master’s students in the PSRL research group and taught EPE 502, Dynamic Systems and Control, at graduate level. Delivered guest lectures at ABB, Aldar Headquarters and Masdar, and presented an accepted IEEE Transactions paper at the IEEE PES General Meeting in Denver, Colorado.

King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals

Full-time · 6 yrs 1 mo · Dhahran, Saudi Arabia · On-site

• Research Fellow

Sep 2012 – Aug 2013 · Distributed Control Systems Research Group, Systems Engineering Department

• Lecturer

Aug 2007 – Sep 2012

As Research Fellow, worked on distributed asynchronous estimation and filtering, developed distributed fault-tolerant control architectures, and supervised two master’s students in the distributed control group.

As Lecturer, led four funded research projects: distributed estimation (DSR RG1105-1), interconnected systems (DSR IN00018), fault detection, isolation and prognosis within the Hybrid Soft Computing group (DSR IN101027), and fault diagnosis under a SABIC Fast Track project (SB100016). This work produced models for distributed network control estimation, reduced-order filters for estimating dynamic system states, and approximate estimation algorithms for leakage, controller, load and sensor faults.

On the teaching side, designed and delivered the Control Engineering Digital Systems Lab and taught the undergraduate Introduction to Technology course. Also supported the faculty recruitment committee in evaluating candidate research profiles and contributed to ABET accreditation and standards compliance.
